Paul Smith studied Fine Art in Leeds, UK. In addition to solo exhibitions in Zurich

and Japan, Smith has participated in group exhibitions at galleries including the

National Portrait Gallery in London, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in

Edinburgh, the Royal Academy of Arts in London and the Royal Birmingham Society

of Artists. His paintings are primarily inspired by local experiences, but also from

travels abroad. Smith says about this artwork, “I painted this picture of the view from

my studio room in Rüschlikon where I was living at the time. I had recently come from

Japan & was adjusting to the clarity of colour & light in Switzerland. Small

observational oil sketches are a good way to quickly sense the atmosphere of a place &

nurture ideas for larger artworks.”
